Booking a private bridal suite at an exclusive bridal boutique is a sacred rite of passage for any bride-to-be. It’s a day entirely dedicated to celebrating the bride, finding the perfect luxury wedding attire, and sharing joyful tears with loved ones. But what happens when the mother of the bride suffers from main character syndrome?
In one of the most infamously toxic episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, 24-year-old bride Chasity Rice experienced the ultimate betrayal. Instead of supporting her daughter’s search for high-end bridal fashion, her mother Harlene decided to steal the spotlight by literally trying on a designer wedding dress herself. It was a heartbreaking display of narcissism that left viewers and wedding planners everywhere absolutely speechless.
The Competing Brides
Chasity arrived at the luxury bridal salon with an amazing story. Married legally in a courthouse to her husband, professional basketball player Lamar Rice, she was finally planning her grand, formal destination wedding ceremony. With a budget of $3,000, she was looking for a classic, vintage bespoke wedding dress to celebrate her big day.
“Today is my day,” Chasity proudly declared.
However, her mother Harlene had other plans. In a shocking twist, Harlene announced to the expert bridal consultant, “My mother is also engaged. Bam!” She made it immediately clear that while they were supposedly there to find Chasity’s dream wedding gown, she would be using the premium shopping experience to look for her own dress as well.
“I really want today to be about me. But knowing my mother, she’s gonna be looking for dresses for herself,” Chasity predicted with a sigh. It was a massive red flag that foreshadowed the ultimate bridal fashion disaster.

The Ultimate Betrayal
The appointment was a tug-of-war from the start. Chasity tried on a stunning, classic fit-and-flare custom bridal design that she instantly fell in love with. Her mother, however, hated it, brutally telling her daughter that the dress made her look “like a virgin.” Instead, Harlene pushed Chasity to try on overly embellished, flashy haute couture wedding dresses that reflected her own loud taste.
But the real heartbreak occurred while Chasity was inside the fitting room changing into her third option. Taking advantage of her daughter’s absence, Harlene grabbed a dress Chasity had just taken off and put it on herself.
When Chasity stepped out of the exclusive bridal fitting room expecting to show off her gown to her family, she was greeted by an empty couch. “Where’s my family? There’s nobody here,” she asked in confusion.
Seconds later, the air was sucked out of the room. Harlene walked out onto the showroom floor wearing a full designer bridal gown. “Does anyone like this on me?” she asked the room, completely ignoring her daughter.
“I Just Wanted Her To Be My Mom”
The devastation on Chasity’s face was instantaneous. Her special day had been completely hijacked. “I felt like my moment was over,” she cried to the cameras. “Today was just about me, but became about her.”
Unable to hold back her emotions, Chasity broke down in tears and confronted her mother in the middle of the luxury bridal salon.
“Why did you try it on? Now you are the focus here,” Chasity sobbed, her voice breaking. “We’re always friends. Then for one moment, I just wanted her to be my mom. You said it would be my day, and you walked out… in a dress.”
The raw, painful confrontation forced Harlene to finally realize the gravity of her selfish actions. Seeing her daughter completely crushed, the mother quickly backpedaled. “When I saw Chasity’s response, I really, really regretted it. I felt like a villain,” Harlene admitted, quickly removing the premium wedding attire.

Salvaging The Bridal Moment
With the toxic distraction finally removed, the wedding day coordinators and consultants swooped in to salvage the appointment. They put Chasity back into the very first vintage gown she had loved. They added a luxury cathedral veil and “jacked her up” to give her the true bridal moment she had been robbed of.
Seeing her daughter glowing and confident, Harlene finally stepped up to the plate and acted like a supportive mother. She showered Chasity with compliments, validating her choice. “It’s perfect for her,” Harlene admitted.
With her mother’s approval and the spotlight firmly back where it belonged, Chasity joyfully said “Yes” to her elegant bridal dress. Though it took a few heartbreaking bumps in the road, the bride left the salon smiling, proving that no one—not even a narcissistic parent—can ruin a bride’s true connection with her perfect gown.
